ARGENTINA-CHILE AGREE TO INTEGRATE THE ENERGY NETWORK AND LIBERALIZE TRADE

(ICE) - ROMA, 30 APR -

Argentina and Chile intends to make bilateral trade more flexible. Therefore, a trade liberalization agreement should be sent to the Congresses of both countries. The announcement came after a meeting between the Argentinean president, Mauricio Macri, and his Chilean counterpart, Sebastian Pinera, in Buenos Aires. Pinera is in his first official trip to a foreign country after his election.

Macri and Pinera also announced the progress in agreements related to energy interaction, mainly renewable energy, in the improvement of border infrastructure between both countries and said that they are joining efforts for an upcoming agreement between Pacific Alliance and Mercosur. Among other issues, Macri and Pinera talked about investments in the natural gas grid and a social infrastructure plan. Currently, Argentina and Chile have underway the project for the construction of the Agua Negra tunnel, on the border.

Macri confirmed that Chile was designated "only country invited" to the G-20 meeting that Argentina will hold in Buenos Aires in November. An election that privileges Chile over Mercosur partners such as Uruguay and Paraguay, and strong allies of Macri like the Colombian Juan Manuel Santos.
