Argentina is enjoying a good 2018 in terms of meat exports. So much so that, after 8 years of being in the fourth regional position, this year had a despeque that allowed him to displace Uruguay as the second seller in volume behind Brazil.

The most open measures carried out by the government of Mauricio Macri, once again positioned Argentine meat as a strong competitor in markets such as China and Europe. Between January and August, Argentina exported 215,000 tons of beef, just above Uruguay, which sold 214,700 tons abroad. Meanwhile, Paraguay exported 180,000 and Brazil achieved external sales of 809,000 tons.

Although Uruguay increased its exports by 6% and Brazil by 7%, Argentina had a meteoric advance, 66% in the year-on-year comparison. Accompanying these increases, Mercosur exports are advancing at full speed. In the 12 months to August, 2.55 million tons of fresh product weight shipped abroad, 285 thousand tons more than in the same period of 2017. In the 12 months of August 2018, the average export value was affirmed in us$4,689 per ton, 3.5% above the previous period. The recovery of Argentina as a meat exporter meant that during the 201/18 period it fulfilled 95.3% of its Hilton quota for the EU after a decade of not being able to cover the assigned quota. In the 2017-2018 cycle, which ended last June 30, 28,000 tons were exported, with a quota of 29,500 tons.

It should be pointed out that Argentina has a cattle stock of more than 52 million animals. Exports of Argentine beef corresponding to August reached a value of us$ 175 million, 82% above the us$ 96 million obtained in the same month of 2017, reported the Institute for the Promotion of Argentine Beef (IPCVA). The volume exported more than doubled in the annual comparison (+ 129%). The shipments of chilled, frozen and processed meat cuts corresponding to August totaled 34,934 tons.
